Whatever Weekend – Whimsical Weddings

Okay, so that’s a lot of alliteration in the title.

Really, though, a friend of mine is planning a wedding, and it has me all nostalgic!

Tom and I have been married nearly 5 and a half years now.

Our wedding was outdoors, with simple fall decorations (lots of plum and green,) and a laid back, picnic-style atmosphere, with a pie bar instead of wedding cake.

Mmmm pie.

It also makes me nostalgic for our friend Tiinia’s wedding. She and her husband, Kevin, were married on the haunt grounds where the work on Friday the 13th. Costumes were encouraged, and the style was a delightful combo of horror and glamorous vintage.

My friend, Tessa, is planning a simple, elegant ceremony, and an Alice in Wonderland themed reception. I’m so excited to help her with decorations for the reception! I’ve loved Alice since I was a little girl, and the possibilities are practically endless.

So, I’ve been working on some inspiration boards on Polyvore.com, a site where you can create your own boards for fashion, beauty, or just for fun.

Here’s some inspiration for her bridal and ceremony style:

Then there’s the reception:

We’ll be thrifting for tea cups, saucers, and pots, clocks, rabbits, and mushrooms, next week.

If you’re planning a wedding, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Keep a check list, and focus on marking one thing off at a time. Here’s a great list that helps you finish each to-do in time: The Knot Wedding Checklist.

2. Create a budget. Once you’ve decided what kind of venue you want (indoor or outdoor, formal or relaxed, etc.,) the kind of food you want to serve, and your wedding style, start working on your budget. If you don’t have all the money you need right now, open a savings account that you can add to each pay period to pay for upcoming costs. Use The Knot Wedding Budget along with your checklist.

3. Ask for help. Ask reliable friends and family to help with tasks you know they can manage. If you have a crafty friend, ask them to help with decorations. If you have an aunt who loves to bake, have her make edible favors, or even theĀ wedding cake if she’s that awesome. Delegate responsibilities to your groomsmen and bridesmaids, like tailoring and dry cleaning, and the bachelor/bachelorette parties. You might feel the need to have your hand in everything to make sure it’s perfect, but it will be worth your sanity (and your beauty sleep!) to accept others’ help.

4. Enjoy your engagement. Make it a point to date during your engagement. Take time away from planning (turn off your electronics if you need to,) and just spend time with your significant other. The engagement flies by, so treasure every second!

Married? What was your wedding like? Any inspiration photos? Any advice you’d like to give brides to be?

Tuesday’s Treasure – A little of this, a little of that

Escape From The City

Escape From The City

Red and White (Made In Texas)

Red and White (Made In Texas)

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any treasuries, so I thought I’d share a couple from the end of last year that I thought you might like. The first one is clever, titled “Escape From The City,” featuring city and travel themed listings, including our JuJu Eyeball sparkly roach earrings. The next treasury follows one of my favorite themes – local! It’s also a Valentine theme, I suppose, in red and white. This is the first time any of my new harnesses have been featured – exciting!

(I apologize that I didn’t post these treasuries sooner – some items that were featured have already sold.)

So, if one of your new year’s resolutions involves buying locally, or supporting handmade/artisans/small business (and good for you for making that resolution,) this is a great place to start. Etsy can be a little overwhelming, even if you do a specific search, and treasuries can be a quick, aesthetically pleasing way to shop.

The weather has been consistently sunny for the past few days here in DFW, so I think, after a quick trip to the pharmacy, I’ll break out the new camera the hubby gave me for Christmas and take some photos for the shop.

Hope your new year has been wonderful so far!

Whatever Weekend: In The Works

As I worked on finishing the letters for my friend’s little girl, I realized that we haven’t listed much in our shops lately! So, finished and listed a hair clip in our JuJu Eyeball store:

As my hubby would say, it’s made with my two favorite colors: sparkly and shiny! I covered a plastic skeleton hand in blue glitter, made a couple of pinwheels from green tulle and black lace, and cut/formed shapes with patent leather ribbon and added an ostrich feather. Viola! Super lightweight and super fun to wear. Now, back to the letters, here’s what the progress looks like so far:

Apologies for the crummy images – I’m definitely a fan of natural light as opposed to flash. Anyway,Ā a fairytale princess theme with lots of pink andĀ a dash of sparkle equals four year old heaven (I hope!) I’ve said before that I’ve never considered myself a painter, but I think I’d like to take a class to beef up my unexistent knowledge of mixing, highlighting, shadowing … because I’m just making it up asĀ I go along. Although I am pretty happy with the results as is; it’s hard not to be proud ofĀ completing somethingĀ ofĀ which you have little to no history or skill.

Finally, happy Father’sĀ Day to all you dads and single moms out there! (Single moms wear the dad hat, too, you know.) I hope it’s been a wonderful day, and IĀ wish everyone a fantastic week!

Yay for superheros and (almost) finishing projects!

Whew! This 3 week summer break has been a doozy so far. I’ve been sick (other than the chronic stuff) twice now, helped with a fundraiser for a friend, went to Comic Con with the hubby (in costume,) and have nearly finished one out of the two sets of painted letters I’m working on for a friend.

To illustrate, here are some pics:

I love that the superhero themed letters and the comic convention came to be around the same time! šŸ˜‰

Weird Wednesday ā€“ Mad Science

One of those Halloween party themes that I’ve never gotten around to is the “Mad Scientist” party. There’d be plenty of neon glowing liquid in jars, specimens, experiments, and lots of gross looking food! (I think thisĀ would be especially funĀ once we have kids to enjoy it.) ForĀ a littleĀ maniacal inspiration this week, here are some of the finest science specimens etsy has to offer:
