Dark Beauty

Take a gander at these wonderful photos taken by Evelyn Murphy (makeup by our friend, Tiinia Auler) featuring Mom’s custom horn headpiece. At least one photo from this shoot will be featured in Dark Beauty Magazine – so exciting!

Change Is A Crafty Thing

My husband and I are settled into our new apartment, comfy and cozy, with only a few lingering items to be unpacked. It’s exciting to experience this new chapter of our lives, and we’re sharing similar excitement with my mom! We’ve been actively house hunting with her, and she’s found one out of the handful we’ve viewed together that she really loves. Rather than put a bed in the large master bedroom, the plan is to convert it into our studio for work. It’s so fun to think of ripping out the carpet, staining the concrete, and arranging the space to store all of our supplies, and create big work spaces. Here are a few photos that have inspired us so far:

Of course, these craft studios are pristine and untouched, which will not be the case with ours. (Is anyone’s creative space that tidy?) The goal is to use the space to create and design for both of our shops, Buy Me Love & JuJu Eyeball, store our vintage backstock, hold crafting lessons and parties, and to invite local customers who have custom orders, and our makeup artist and model friends, to meet with us so that they can get a better idea of what we do and what materials we have available. We’ll each need our own work spaces, which could also serve as work surfaces for classes, space to store our supplies, a place for our vintage clothing and accessories (as well as an area for models to try them on,) a space to take product photos, and an “office” area for the computer and paperwork that needs to be done on occasion. We can’t wait to create our studio so we can share it with you!

Happy National Earth Month!

Happy Earth Month, everyone! I’m so glad to see that the earth-friendly living “trend” isn’t just a trend anymore, and that people are taking notice how much we affect the earth around us. A large part of our business is reusing and repurposing the old into new items to make a positive ecological impact.

The other day on my other blog, Chelsea, Like England, I wrote a post about easy upcycling projects you can do around the house as you do your spring cleaning.

I received an email today from Michaels with lists of re-useful projects, including fashion, furniture, decor, and even a block party idea to celebrate Earth Day. They’re also teaming up with American Forests to plant trees with just a simple text.

Ten for Tuesday Pledge

Just a few days ago, I reposted this pledge on our mission’s Facebook page, encouraging our students to pick up ten pieces of trash each Tuesday. This works anywhere, of course, not just on a college campus, and it’s a great way to celebrate Earth Month way beyond April.

Tuesday’s Treasure – Texas Harmony

Now that Etsy 817 and Etsy Fort Worth have merged, I’m seeing all kinds of new content from new people!

Here’s a look at the EFW blog, and the latest team treasury: http://www.etsyfortworth.com/2013/04/great-gift-ideasno-fooling.html

Here’s a pretty, springy green treasury by my friend Amy from Larkspur Studio:

Tuesday’s Treasure – A little of this, a little of that

Escape From The City

Escape From The City

Red and White (Made In Texas)

Red and White (Made In Texas)

It’s been a while since I’ve posted any treasuries, so I thought I’d share a couple from the end of last year that I thought you might like. The first one is clever, titled “Escape From The City,” featuring city and travel themed listings, including our JuJu Eyeball sparkly roach earrings. The next treasury follows one of my favorite themes – local! It’s also a Valentine theme, I suppose, in red and white. This is the first time any of my new harnesses have been featured – exciting!

(I apologize that I didn’t post these treasuries sooner – some items that were featured have already sold.)

So, if one of your new year’s resolutions involves buying locally, or supporting handmade/artisans/small business (and good for you for making that resolution,) this is a great place to start. Etsy can be a little overwhelming, even if you do a specific search, and treasuries can be a quick, aesthetically pleasing way to shop.

The weather has been consistently sunny for the past few days here in DFW, so I think, after a quick trip to the pharmacy, I’ll break out the new camera the hubby gave me for Christmas and take some photos for the shop.

Hope your new year has been wonderful so far!

First show of the season – Art Hunger

Just wanted to share some pictures of our first show of the season, and our first show representing our newest shop, JuJu Eyeball!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The day was slow (we guessed that about 20 customers passed by our booth,) due to little advertising, a festival down the street blocking traffic, and an electrical outage issue on the block. We did make some new vendor friends, and made a couple of great contacts with customers! Mom sold a couple of her sand castings and that was it, but the booth fee was very inexpensive. We ended up spending a little money on ourselves and for Christmas presents, and my husband (while running home to get the purse I forgot, and the wallet he didn’t realize he left at home until he was on his way back) brought one of our good friends back with him, so we ended up having a great time.

Art hungry!

We have almost exactly a month to plan for our booth at Grand Prairie’s Art Hunger show on October 6. It’s a monthly collection of local artists, featured at the Grand Prairie Convention Center in downtown. We’re excited to be doing a show before/near Halloween, something we haven’t done yet. It’s a perfect fit for our other shop, JuJu Eyeball, where we list all of our weird and creepy creations. Our latest listing is Lola; she’s larger than life, and we think you’ll love her as much as we do!

So, here’s to locking ourselves in and working our weird little fingers off!
