If you’re in the DFW area, you’re most likely at home, because the schools and businesses are closed due to the unusually icy weather dramatically labeled the “Icepocalypse.”
So, it’s the perfect time to snuggle up with a book or movie, a cuddly blanket, an animal or two, and maybe even finish up some Christmas shopping online.

You may remember the custom orders we did for our friend, Tiinia, and her Friday the 13th wedding at a Dallas haunted house’s grounds (which was all featured on Offbeat Bride – how cool is that?)
We’ve become friends with Tiinia and her husband Kevin, who play delightfully creepy characters at 13th Street, and Alex, the owner/operator of the haunt grounds, and we’re constantly in awe of their talents!
Several weeks ago, our friend Stephanie from Studio Longoria sent me a message with a great idea. Since we (JuJu Eyeball) and another of our Etsy teammates, Amy of Larkspur Studio and Frankensister all sell Halloween appropriate items, why shouldn’t we contact some local haunted houses to see if we could set up shop on the grounds?
I instantly thought of Alex and his awesome haunts, 13th Street Morgue and Dungeon of Doom (which neighbor Reindeer Manor.)
So, I got in touch with him, and we’ll be setting up booths this Friday, 10/18, and next Friday, 10/25; we’re so excited! It’s definitely a unique job. It’s not an arts and crafts “show” or convention, and we won’t be working typical show hours, which are usually morning to mid afternoon, or afternoon to evening. Nope, we’ll be set up in time for the houses to open at 8, and we’ll close the place down around 12:30 a.m. So, if you’re in the DFW area, and you’re looking for some fantastic Halloween fun (maybe after a Friday night football game?) come out and see us!
So excited to be a part of Etsy817’s Handmade Holidays again this year! Last year we had the show in one of the gyms in the UTA activity center, but this year it’s in Arlington’s Lincoln Square, which is a large shopping center on the north side of the city. The team leaders were able to find a couple of spaces available for rent, and are currently hoping to upgrade to the larger space due to the massive amounts of vendor applications sent in this year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the bigger space comes through, because it’s going to be an awesome show already. If you’re in the area and interested in more info, check out the Etsy817 blog here.
Since the show is going to be here before we know it (in early December,) Mom and I are both in serious creative mode. I’ve been hanging on to some pretty crocheted pieces my grandmother made and left to us, wondering what I should do with them, when it hit me. I’ve been into the trend of body harnesses and jewelry for a long time now. In fact, one of my favorite treasures is a beaded hand harness (ring/bracelet combo) that my grandmother gave me for Christmas years and years ago. Now, of course, it’s this huge trend, and I’ve been thinking of ways I could make the trend my own to sell in the shop. Enter the crocheted squares, hearts, teardrops, flowers, and circles that have been taking up space in one of my many plastic storage containers! So, I started hand beaded each of them, adding charms and buttons, picturing how each piece would lay as jewelry. Add chain, and you have very fall & winter appropriate shoulder and body harnesses.
So, what do you think? It takes a certain person to brave body harnesses, I think, but I’m one of those people! I hope that these pieces are distinct enough that people will want to wear them over sweaters and blazers as the weather gets cooler. If you’d like to make your own, easy and understated chain body harness, take a look at this easy to follow tutorial.

This month, we participated in Etsy 817’s first show – Handmade Holidays! As members and vendors, we were excited to see how it all turned out. Other than some issues with signage and the university, including employees forgetting to lock the downstairs entrance to the upstairs jogging track above our gym (helloooo, random joggers above our heads,) it was a great show!
I have to say, I was impressed by the variety and quality of the vendors’ items. We’ve been to lots of shows, and jewelry and baby items can sometimes dominate the scene. (Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t give you many choices!)
We had a bit of a snafu with our setup, but that was quickly remedied by nice neighbors and the show organizers. Here’s how it looked:
To check out pics of the other amazing vendors, go here.
Luckily, we had my hubby with us to help setup, and got to browse the show and do some Christmas shopping! I bought some yummy smelling soaps from Clover Hollow, Iron Man coasters for the bro in law from Make It Sick, a bookmark for the MIL from Book-Inz (our neighbors!) and some local photog prints.
Hoping all of you had a merry Christmas!
