Whatever Weekend – Icepocalypse 2013 (and Boredom Busters)

Thursday evening, it started to sleet, and Friday morning, we woke up to this:

003

I know it may look like snow, but it’s mostly 2 inches of ice on the ground and street. Our driveway isn’t smooth concrete, by the way – it’s gravel – and it still looks like this, but packed down and slick from walking on it.

Now, to those of you up north, this scene might look pretty familiar, but to those of us in North Texas, it’s pretty rare. We tend to get snow once a year, around February, but ice like this is unusual. Of course, the city wasn’t prepared, so the roads weren’t prepped, and most of us are stuck at home. Fortunately, we’re within walking distance of a few gas stations and dollar stores, and we’re friends with our neighbors, so we haven’t been totally isolated. Arlington is a big city, though, and many people who live here work in Dallas or Fort Worth, which means they have to make it out of their icy neighborhoods before they can get on main roads and highways to make it there.

So, we’re just waiting for Monday, when things are finally supposed to start melting for good.

If you’re getting a little bored from being stuck inside, don’t forget about entering our giveaway here – today is the last day of our first week of giveaways!

Here’s a list of Etsy shops to peruse: Icepocalypse Sale. Don’t forget, if you shop any EFW members’ shops, you can enter to win a giveaway worth $100!

How about some grown up snow day activities …

… Or kid-friendly snow day actvities?

You can always start a new Pinterest board with pics of tropical vacations and summer outfits, or dance around to your favorite music to stay warm!

Another Week Away Giveaway!

giveawaypic

9/23: Congratulations to our randomly selected winner, Cheryl Pullen Navalinsky!

In light of all the loving support we’ve received in the Martha Stewart Living American Made competition, and the deadline for the first round of voting being extended another week (and two days, to be precise,) we’ve decided to hold our very own giveaway!

Each time you vote for a nominee in the competition, you enter to win prizes from MSL, like an American Express gift card. Now, every day you vote, you can enter to win prizes from us, too!

Vote now through 9/22/13. One lucky winner will be randomly selected on 9/23/13 to win this fantastic prize package of unique, American made gifts, a value of over $60.00!:

012

1 $25 Etsy Gift Card; 1 Luchador Mask Pillow by Studio Longoria; 1 Bamboo Calendula Bar Soap by Clover Hollow Soaps & Sundries; 1 Blue Rhinestone Bracelet by Leslie Anne Levine; 15% OFF Your Next Purchase at Buy Me Love or JuJu Eyeball on Etsy; 1 Surprise Gift From Our Store, Buy Me Love!

Two Ways To Enter:

1. This step is mandatory. Simply vote for us, using any number of your 6 daily votes here:

Martha Stewart - American Made 2013 - Nominee Badge

Then, comment that you voted below, and include the total number of votes after you voted UPDATE: No need to keep track of the total number of times you’ve voted, personally! Just include the total number on the screen after you’ve voted for the day. For example, if the number is 2,222 before you vote, and you vote for us 6 times, the total you’ll include in your comment will be 2,228. Easy peasy. Sorry for the confusion! Please leave only one “I voted!” comment per voter per day, not one comment per vote. For example, if you use all 6 of your votes on our profile (wink, wink,) there’s no need to comment 6 times – just comment once.

2. For extra chances to win, you can Pin this giveaway on Pinterest , and leave a comment below up to once a day that you pinned, including the pin URL. (After you pin, click the “see it now” button to copy and paste the pin’s URL into your comment below.) This entry method is completely optional.

IMPORTANT NOTES: If you leave more than one “I voted!” comment, or “I pinned it!” comment per day, only one of each of those comments will count toward your chances of winning. You do not need to have a WordPress.com account to enter. This contest is in no way affiliated with Martha Stewart Living/MSL American Made, or Etsy. Contest valid only in the Continental U.S.

How To Know If You Won:

The randomly selected winner of the prize package will be announced in this post on 9/23/13, and we will also contact the winner via the email address listed on their account. If you do not have a valid email address listed on the account you use to log in/comment, you must leave your email address in your comment(s.) (The $25 Etsy gift card will also be emailed to the winner.) If the winner does not respond within 48 hours, we will choose another winner for the prize package.

Thank you for supporting our small, handmade, and American made business, and good luck to all our voters!

Important update on the Martha Stewart American Made competition.

American Made

I have to say, I’ve been a bit obsessive about the voting on our nominee page for the Martha Stewart Living American Made competition. Lots of refreshing, friends. We’d been receiving around 100 votes a day thanks to our wonderful friends and family, until the weekend hit. Saturday was the most exciting day yet! My regularly schedule pleas on Facebook were heard, and we accumulated the largest amount of votes in one day yet: 440. I think I had heart palpitations every time I saw the numbers jump.

bigvotes

Those of you who know us or follow this blog know that there have been plenty of obstacles on this journey my mom and I have been on, starting a small business together. There have been plenty of health struggles along the way that have gotten in the way of us being able to do shows and list regularly in our Etsy shops. It’s been the support from our Etsy Fort Worth team, our family, our friends, and our small group of loyal customers that has kept us going.

Our competition in this particular contest is big. We’re competing in the style category, and that category is filled with not only clothing and accessories, but bath and body and cosmetic products. The largest number of votes to beat so far is 4446, and that’s just in our category! After the first round of voting, the nominee with the biggest amount of votes from each category goes on to compete for the grand prize. So, we were excited to learn that the deadline for the first round of voting has been extended another week and two days. That plus the increase we’ve seen in our votes gives us a little extra boost of hope that we can give our competition a run for their money! In this case, the grand prize is $10,000 … can you imagine what we could do for our business with that kind of money?

So, please keep voting, and sharing our nominee page with your friends and family! You can join us on Facebook, or just go straight to our page here. Go back every day to use your 6 votes. You’ll be supporting small, local, handmade business, and you’ll be entering yourself to win prizes from MSL every time you vote.

We need your votes!

It’s that time! We entered this year’s Martha Stewart American Made competition for the chance to win anything from a gift basket full of goodies to $10,000 for our business and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to New York for the expo to display our work. You can go directly to our profile here:

I’ve had a late start reminding everyone of the competiton, because Mom’s been recovering from a knee replacement. It’s been almost three weeks, and though they made mistakes at the hospital with her medications, and she’s had a bad reaction to the pain meds they prescribed her, she’s finally feeling better and on her way to rehabilitation! We’re both excited to start building up our business after a long road of health struggles and other obstacles, and look forward to having our own studio workspace together.

We’ll keep you updated on the voting process, and if we win, we’ll share every step of the way with you. Please share the link to our profile with your friends – thank you for voting!

Make It Monday – A Very Belated Reveal

Um, wasn’t Halloween yesterday? No, wait, that was Christmas. Where did the time go?!?

Anyway, here’s the very belated reveal of my finished mermaid costume and our Trunk Or Treat decorations:

It’s hard to tell that I’m super glittery in the pics, but I assure you I was glittery for a week after! (And it was the glow in the dark kind …)

I Know That Guy Jason, Who Won The CNN iReporter Royal Wedding Contest

So, I went to high school with this really funny, smart, sweet kid named Jason Sauter. He always told me I would be famous, and that I would audition for American Idol and win. (Which, turns out, is kind of a curse if you’re not Kelly Clarkson, so I’m glad I’ve never auditioned! Although, with the current chance of meeting Steven Tyler …) Clearly, I’m not famous – yet – and Mr. Sauter is winning in the fame game:

http://cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com/2011/04/19/cnn-reveals-winner-of-royal-wedding-ireporter-contest/

I don’t think mere words can express how happy I am for Jason and his girlfriend, Nancy! The joy could only be captured in the form of Snoopy Dance or song.

Jason, I know you’ll be a fantastic on-the-scenes reporter for the royal wedding. You’re talented, genuine, and you totally deserve this. If you get nervous, picture the queen in her undies … or not. Your call.

Favorites & Freebies – Forts, Fawkes & Friday

Well, I guess all the holiday rush has finally caught up with me. I didn’t blog two days this week, and I’m starting to feel the stress of the season. Since I forgot our “Thoughtful Thursday” post, I’d just like to share how thankful I am for all of the people who have offered their help and support as I branch out into unknown territory. The volunteers have come out of the woodwork for the festival next month, and I couldn’t be more excited!

So, This pretty much sums up my Friday today:

You. Me. Fort Cute & Goofy Greeting Card by VixensEmpire

It’s chilly outside, I’m wearing my husband’s hoodie and flannel pajama pants, curled up under a quilt Granny made us. It’s a fort kinda day! I’m going to hunker down and get crafty.

On another fun note, happy Guy Fawkes Day! For those of you living in Britain, or who’ve seen or read “V for Vendetta,” you know what I’m talking about. “Remember, remember, the 5th of November. The gunpowder, treason and plot. I know of no reason the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.” For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s a little wikihistory to bring you up to speed.

Now for the good stuff.

For your slightly more sophisticated side, belledecoutoure is giving away these elegant and whimsical pebble earrings by hperl:

Check out this free, yummy sounding twist on banana nut bread recipe from iplayoutsidethebox. What a cool thing to bring to the family’s Thanksgiving celebration! I’ve found that pineapple is also a great addition to sweet potato dishes. You might want to check it out if you’ve never tried it.

Here’s a freebie from digitalpaperprincess – a November calendar PDF file. Replace the picture with your own, and print out a size small enough to slip in your purse! You can even laminate it and stick it on the fridge for an instant dry-erase calendar that you can use again next year.

I hope everyone has had a great first week of November!
